Day 33

From Willoughby Bay to near the Pocaty River, VA
N 36 40.233  W -76 03.810
32 miles, c. 8 hours

This was the day we didn't go to the Dismal Swamp.  We came close!  Lorenzo was enchanted by the whole idea, and got much positive feedback online from other cruisers.  Lovely in autumn, wild animals and birds- but also a shallow draft and muddy bottom.  Most of these guys are sailors- so not used to hitting bottom in a hunk of steel.  But they got the idea.  Finally, someone just emailed him 'LORENZO-  DON'T GO!'

Instead we spent the day clearing the ton of minor bridges and locks in the first few miles of the ICW.  Each has a unique schedule- some open on the hour, or the half hour, or not during commute hours.  Here we are, waiting at one behind all these lovely sailboats.

  1. To quote John Bunyan:

"This miry Slough is such a place as cannot be mended; it is the descent whither the scum and filth that attends conviction for sin doth continually run, and therefore is it called the Slough of Despond: for still as the sinner is awakened about his lost condition, there ariseth in his soul many fears, and doubts, and discouraging apprehensions, which all of them get together, and settle in this place"

I agree with your Plan B

  2. 'You have reached the Dismal Swamp welcome center where we can assist you with your tourism needs. Ah can assure you it is not dismal here.'

  3. Although the name is intriguing for sure, it sounds like bad karma to me. Better to avoid it. But if you make it through do you get some sort of sticker that says this boat survived the Dismal Swamp, like the ones you get in NH that say This car climbed Mt Washington? It might be impressive to wear such a badge of courage.

  4. Could you have taken the dinghy in? Sounds to intriguing for words! And more fun than sitting in line waiting for a drawbridge or a lock!
