Day 7

Took the train to midtown and had lunch with Mickey at MOMA- then saw the Matisse show.  It was wonderful.  We were too saturated to look at anything else- did see a silly movie, though, and came back to Queens to eat Hunan food.

Day 6

Touring Queens:  Asian food paradise.  Also near a YMCA, where an attendant got us some half price guest passes- !  We heart NY. Y's are great hangouts.

Day 5

From 79th St Boat Basin, NYC to World's Fair Marina, Queens
N 40 45.745  W 73 57.161
20 miles, 3.5 hours

Safe place, no current, view of Shea Stadium and LaGuardia runways.
Raining nonstop.

Day 4

alas- not so idyllic on 79th St.  The current's so strong, our boat dragged its anchor out.  Lucky we were aboard and noticed what was happening!  Had to reanchor and move to another spot.

Day 3

From Eatons Neck, Long Island NY to 79th St Boat Basin, NYC
N 40 48.061  W 73 58.568
42 miles, 7 hours

This was a beautiful day and an easy ride, with lots of Saturday boaters out.  The camera chose this moment to implode, so no pix of the U.N. - it was surrounded by Coast Guard boats protecting I'm-A-Dinner-Jacket.  At the boat basin, our previous spot was filled with large sailboats, so we're anchored about a mile to the north of 79th St. in a prettier spot.

Day 1

From Portsmouth RI to Old Lyme CT
N 41 17.714  W 72 14.206
63 miles, 10 hours

We left Island Park at 6:00 am, passing the Abbey around 7:30.  Muz was at Mass- at least, we didn't notice any flashing headlights.  (We did see her car on Manor Drive, on her way to church with the McDonoughs.)
Elle and Doug caught up with us on the other side of Conanicut Island in a faster, more maneuverable boat.  They did not want to cruise Long Island Sound, though, so we said goodbye.

Byeeee!

We're taking off for warmer waters tomorrow- starting with LI Sound and working our way down to the lower latitudes.  Got a lovely hypalon boat from West Marine- like driving a puffy mattress.  Had dinner with Marcel and Kristina last night in Orleans (at Abba:  good place).  Tonight will join the ranks at Muzz's for pizza.

Yesterday we drove down to Brewster to visit with Mark and Tia (and Dave, and BZ) which was of course just a FABulous time.  Lorenzo and Mark lolled around the pond all day, chatting and sailing.  Dave fished.  Tia, BZ, and I ran around like maniacs, doing errands and hunting and gathering for dinner.  BZ was determined to see the Kennedy compound in Hyannis (while not exactly owning up, I also wanted to see this).  She persuaded a truck driver to give her true local directions (when you see the Do Not Enter sign, keep going) and after several dead ends, we found the surprisingly modest site of so many large tabloid headlines.

at Kaitlin's birthday party on Saturday

Yesterday Doug and Elle brought their boat over from the Narragansett side.  And Meg and Joann came for dinner (dessert was excellent).

Saturday, September 11, 2010

We're anchored off Portsmouth, RI for another couple of weeks, before heading south for the winter- it sounds so inevitable. Already it seems cold in the morning- and when the water cools off, we will be motivated.  Elle's coming over today, for Caitlin's birthday party- and we'll have dinner with Meg tomorrow.

Hope to track down the stragglers (att. Ann, Don, Greg) and revisit the Boelitz clan before we leave.

The threat of Earl is passing. Through my glasses in the helm I can already see some pink skinned shore monkeys dragging their lawn furniture back out and setting up their umbrellas.
